Position Summary
We Mean Business Coalition (WMBC) is a global coalition of nonprofit organizations, working with the world’s most influential businesses to take action on climate change. We are working to transform the world economy so that it is on track to limit global warming to 1.5°C in ways that deliver sustainable economic growth and shared prosperity. Through unprecedented collaboration, we catalyze business action and drive ambitious policy to halve emissions by 2030 and accelerate an inclusive transition to a net-zero economy by 2050, at the latest.
The Corporate Net Zero team works at the core of the coalition to mainstream science-based net zero, setting the new bar for business leadership and action on climate. We work across a range of partnerships to guide net zero approaches towards credibility and complementary, we support initiatives to ratchet global ambition by mobilizing thousands of businesses and we direct companies to the tools they need to deliver on bold net zero climate strategies. Supporting global corporations and small to medium enterprises, we are defining the story of net zero in the decisive decade for climate action.
We Mean Business Coalition is also a founding partner and the host organization of the SME Climate Hub, leading efforts that support the reach and engagement of small businesses in climate action.
About the SME Climate Hub
The SME Climate Hub provides a one-stop-shop where small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can make a climate commitment and access best-in-class tools and resources to measure their emissions, develop a climate strategy and reduce their footprint at a pace required by science. It is the official pathway for SMEs to join the United Nations Race to Zero campaign.
The Hub partners with non-profits, multinational companies, financial institutions and governments to create clear incentives and opportunities for SMEs that commit to achieving net zero before 2050. It is driven as a lean-start-up project with participation and contributions from the founding partners: We Mean Business Coalition, Exponential Roadmap Initiative and the UN Race to Zero.
We are seeking an experienced senior manager to join our high-performing, remote team.
Responsibilities
- Develops, refines and leads SME Climate Hub’s approach to corporate supply chain decarbonization, building synergies with WMBC’s Net Zero programs, campaigns and communications
- Works with the SME Climate Hub team, partners and WMBC coalition partners (e.g. WBCSD, CDP) to accelerate and streamline SME commitments, reporting and action on net zero
- Tracks global and local SME standards (e.g. GHG, ISO, EFRAG, Bankers for Net Zero) and policy/regulatory developments, provides input for related consultations, and supports the SME Climate Hub’s policy advocacy activities in collaboration with the WMBC Policy team
- Leads on developing and sourcing the right action tools and guidance for the SME Climate Hub, with support from the Manager, Net Zero Action
- Develops and maintains SME Climate Hub action plans together with partners and ensures effective coordination and delivery of projects related to SME tools, SME standards and supply chains
- Supports fundraising and oversees the regranting process and coordination for projects in relation to SME Climate Hub tools
- Work with the Senior Manager, Strategic partnerships to develop and manage corporate partnerships for the SME Climate Hub, incl. related new digital functionalities and monetisation strategies
- Represents the SME Climate Hub and WMBC in various coalitions, initiatives and events to support collective impact, promote alignment of activities and influence strategy
- Provides technical support and input to the Managing Director, Net Zero in the strategy, coordination and execution of the Coalition’s Net Zero programs and campaigns, in collaboration with external stakeholders (e.g. Scope 3 Expert Working Group, SBTi Advisory Group, OECD etc.)
- Line management responsibility for one person in the SME Climate Hub team
Experience
- Bachelor’s degree acceptable but preferably Master’s Degree in relevant field or equivalent work experience
- >12 years’ experience focused on corporate sustainability
- Excellent understanding of SME climate action, corporate supply chain sustainability and science-based target setting.
- Experience of working within or closely with companies on sustainability, ideally both SMEs and multinational companies
- Experience of working within or closely with global initiatives on climate change
- Strong understanding of the role of SMEs in delivering on net zero goals
- Experience of managing teams
- Prior experience with remote-work a plus
Skills
- Self-starter with demonstrated agile project management and leadership skills necessary to work across teams and organizations, in a rapidly changing environment
- Effective written and oral communication skills (English is the working language)
- Solves problems with bold, thoughtful, and active approach to systems-based thinking
- Ability to convene, mediate and facilitate discussions among senior stakeholders in business and NGO spheres
- A partnership mindset and service mentality; naturally connects and builds strong relationships with diverse internal and external audiences, demonstrating strong emotional intelligence
- Excellent planner and organizer with the ability to manage complex projects in a fast-paced environment
