Achieving Green Steel: Roadmap to a Net Zero Steel Sector in India
The Energy and Resources Institute (Teri)A new report from The Energy and Resources Institute (Teri) provides an overview of the current state of India’s steel sector and details a range of possible emissions mitigation strategies.
In the near-term, it proposes that implementation of strategies such as maximizing energy efficiency, increasing utilization of scrap, introducing green product standards, creating demand for green steel, setting up pilot demonstration plants based on low carbon technologies, and initiatives to develop a domestic carbon market may be necessary to ensure that the Indian steel sector is in better position to move towards rapid decarbonization post-2030.
The report outlines how international support in terms of low carbon technologies and finance will be crucial for this sector. It details how these measures could incentivize a large scale switch that will put the entire sector onto a net-zero trajectory.
