COP 22 Marrakech: Preview
We Mean BusinessDecision makers from 197 states will soon be coming together in Morocco for COP22. Three days before the convention begins, the Paris Agreement will come into force, far faster than expected, making us all witnesses to unprecedented progress on climate change.
COP22 is an opportunity to reconnect, to encourage new commitments from the private sector, demonstrate that businesses are taking ambitious action on climate change and advocate for the enabling policies that catalyze business leadership.
There are a plethora of events on offer in Marrakech. Below are a few, but by no means all, highlights.
- Business and Industry Day | 9 November | Register here
The Business and Industry Champions sessions will be co-facilitated by CDP and We Mean Business, partnering with UN Global Compact and La Confédération Générale des Entreprises du Maroc (CGEM). Business has a significant role to play in enabling the global economy to achieve – and exceed – its climate goals.
As a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, the private sector is a crucial partner in securing a prosperous and sustainable low-carbon economy for all. Business leaders are taking heed; more companies are now committed to leadership on climate action than at any time in history. But, there is more to be done to fully realise business’ potential to contribute to putting the world on a below 2°C trajectory. The Business & Industry Day will bring together representatives from the private and public sectors, to showcase corporate action and discuss how it can be rapidly scaled-up ahead of 2020.
- Unlocking ambition: How non-party stakeholders are contributing to the low carbon transition | 12 November | Watch the live stream
Companies, investors and sub-national governments are committed to contribute to deliver the Paris agreement. Join CDP for a discussion on how to accelerate implementation and create a virtuous cycle of climate action, public and private sector collaboration, guided by new standards and powered by innovation.
- Development and Climate Days | 12-13 November | Register here
The 14th annual event is themed ‘Global ambition. Local action. Climate resilience for all’. D&C Days always aim to encourage innovative thinking, drawing on disciplines ranging from neuroscience to improvisational jazz. Amid the formal climate negotiations, D&C Days offer an opportunity for policymakers, researchers and practitioners to meet informally to explore key issues and ideas for future action.
We Mean Business are co-organisers, the first time a business organisation has been involved, and we’d like to extend a warm invitation to all businesses present at COP22 to join us. You can register to attend above and track the discussion on Twitter using #DCdays.
