Decarbonizing Oat Milk: Oatly Goes Electric
We Mean Business Coalition & Oatly
This video is part of our series, Electric Advantage in Action, which spotlights how businesses are capitalizing on the tangible, wide-ranging benefits that come with electrification.
Oatly, the global producer of oat milk, is working to decarbonize its operations through electrification. In its factories, Oatly is cutting steam use and replacing it with waste heat, electric heat exchangers, and electric heat pumps to produce its signature oat milk. Oatly is also rethinking how it makes steam in the first place, turning to electric boilers and alternative fuels.
Erin Augustine, Vice President of Sustainability at Oatly, highlights the need for policymakers to support electrification by building necessary infrastructure, advancing technology, improving financing and putting policies in place that make it easier for businesses like Oatly to electrify.
Transcript:
Erin Augustine, Vice President of Sustainability at Oatly:
“At Oatly, we exist to help people live healthier lives without recklessly taxing the planet’s resources in the process.”
“In order to do that, electrification is a key component of our strategy to decarbonize both our factories and our logistics network and supply chains.”
“In the factory itself, our decarbonization strategy includes using less steam. That’s one of the places where electrification comes in because we can use waste heat instead of steam, using electric heat pumps and electric heat exchangers.”
“Part of our strategy is to make steam differently, which could be done through electrification, if we’re talking about an electric boiler, or another alternative fuel.”
“Policymakers and other businesses: the messages to both of them is to help support electrification by creating infrastructure, improving technology and financing.”
“Putting policies in place that incentivize the adoption of electrification would really help us meet our goals and implement more of these technologies.”
