We Mean Business Coalition responds to France’s call to delay EU methane rules

In response to French President Emmanuel Macron’s call for the European Commission to postpone new methane reporting requirements, Maria Mendiluce, CEO, We Mean Business Coalition said:
“Methane abatement and energy security are not opposing goals. Methane lost through leaks and flaring is wasted energy. Cutting those emissions can mean more product captured and used, while also delivering one of the fastest available reductions in near-term warming. Delaying implementation shouldn’t be the focus but how to make it workable during a supply shock.
“The regulation already contains safeguards for energy security, and the Commission has recommended that penalties should not be applied when supply is directly at risk , except in cases of fraud, while companies work towards compliance. So there is already scope to manage short-term supply and compliance risks without stepping back from the objective of reducing methane emissions.”
