We Mean Business statement on a Net-Zero target for the UK
We Mean BusinessWe encourage the government to legislate for a long-term goal of net-zero emissions for the UK as a whole, reflecting the agreement it made with other governments in Paris at COP21.
Each of us has made a public commitment to set a GHG emissions reduction or renewable energy use target for our own organisation which is consistent with the long term temperature goal in the Paris Agreement of holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels and to achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century.
We have done this because it makes business sense and because we want to ensure long-term sustainability and profitability. We are companies with significant operations and emissions in the United Kingdom. The sustainable prosperity of the UK is in all of our interests and we support efforts towards the creation of a binding national net-zero emissions target.
