Asia Pulp and Paper joins We Mean Business campaign and commits to remove deforestation from its supply chain
We Mean BusinessSeptember 17, 2015:
Today, We Mean Business coalition announced that one of the world’s largest pulp and paper companies, Asia Pulp and Paper (APP), has joined the We Mean Business campaign, a global platform for businesses and investors to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy. Companies and investors can join the campaign by taking bold climate actions and committing to any of the initiatives that are driving the low-carbon transition.
APP has committed to stop deforestation from its supply chains by 2020, acknowledging the importance of this target to reduce both material business risks and its carbon footprint. APP has taken a bold step towards the creation of sustainable and resilient supply chains, which will drive economic and social benefits across its business and the communities where it operates.
APP announced its sustainable policies in February 2013 to end deforestation across its supply chain and implement a landscape approach to protect forests and local communities. As part of this climate policy, the company set one of the most ambitious targets ever made by a private company: restore and support the conservation of one million hectares of rainforest across Indonesia.
Nigel Topping, CEO of We Mean Business, commented: “We welcome Asia Pulp and Paper on board of our We Mean Business campaign with such a bold commitment. APP’s sustainable policies have made it a leader in the climate challenge and are pushing the low-carbon transition forward in some of the most delicate areas of the world.”
APP joins some of the world’s most influential companies such as Nestlé, H&M, Unilever, Swiss Re, BT, L’Oréal among others, which are taking bold steps to create transformative change needed to drive a clean energy revolution.
To date, 150+ companies with a market cap of more than US 3.5 trillion and 100+ investors with more than 7.5 trillion assets under management have committed to taking bold climate action through the campaign. In September, more announcements and commitments will be made from businesses, investors and policymakers during Climate Week NYC.
About Asia Pulp & Paper
Asia Pulp & Paper Group (APP) is a trade name for a group of pulp and paper manufacturing companies in Indonesia and China. APP is responsible for delivering quality products to meet the growing global demand for tissue, packaging and paper. On any given day, our products find their way into the hands of consumers in various branded forms all over the world.
Started in 1972 with Tjiwi Kimia producing caustic soda, we now run operations across Indonesia and China with an annual combined pulp, paper, packaging product and converting capacity of over 20 million tons per annum. Today, APP markets its products in more than 120 countries across six continents.
Over the years, we have expanded our operations significantly through the acquisition and expansion of several of our pulp and paper mills. It’s our commitment to customer satisfaction that enables us to grow our share in paper sales worldwide and to broaden our presence through offices in many countries. We believe ‘tradition and modernity go hand in hand’ which means we value long term relationships as part of our Eastern traditions, while also embracing modern values of innovation and efficiency.
Maintaining the integrity of our supply chain is crucial to APP’s operations. APP launched its Sustainability Roadmap Vision 2020 in June 2012 and announced its Forest Conservation Policy in February 2013, both designed to further improve APP’s environmental performance, biodiversity conservation, and protection of community rights. Key objectives of the Roadmap are to ensure that APP pulpwood suppliers protect areas of High Conservation Value (HCV) and High Carbon Stock (HCS), manage peatlands responsibly, and are 100% Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) certified by 2020.
In April 2014, APP launched its commitment to support the protection and restoration of one million hectares of forest in Indonesia. To date, APP and its suppliers have allocated approximately 600,000 hectares for conservation within its suppliers’ concessions and for ecosystem restoration.
