Electric Advantage

Electric Advantage is a multi-year program that provides a platform for collective business and government leadership to accelerate the transition to modern, clean electrified economies.

Here you will find program goals, who we’re working with and latest news.

A cheaper, safer, healthier future is electric

Electrified economies are the future. They drivdown costs, while increasing security and productivity. They enable countries and businesses to modernize, innovate and grow.

Electrification is the most efficient route to this future. It is the fastest, most scalable and most systemic way to modernize and decarbonize the economy

At the heart of this advantage is a simple economic reality. Electrified technologies like electric vehicles, heat pumps and electrified industrial processes can deliver the same services as fossil-fuel systems but with far greater efficiency and reliability. They expand the use of clean electricity across sectors, unlocking greater value for economies.

Done well, electrification can become the greatest economic opportunity of the century. Countries and businesses that harness this opportunity will build the foundations of prosperity for decades to come – creating economies that are more affordable, more secure and more productive.

We set out why electrification is the solution for more affordable, secure and competitive economies in a white paper, Electric Advantage: The Business Case for an Electrified Economy.

About the program

Electric Advantage is a multi-year program focused on spurring industry action, reforming regulations and driving investment in electrification to accelerate us all toward a cheaper, safer, healthier future.

Our vision is that by 2030, electrification is embedded in the strategies, investments and policy frameworks that shape economies and markets, with demand for electrified solutions — powered by abundant, resilient and affordable clean electricity — accelerating the transition away from fossil fuels, and acting as the driving force for competitiveness, security, affordability and better livelihoods.

About the program

By the numbers

75%

of existing energy demand can already be electrified.

2–5x

less energy used by heat pumps, electric cooking and EVs compared to fossil-based alternatives.

74%

of the global population lives in countries that are net importers of fossil fuels.

How will we get there?

To make this happen, business and governments need the tools, investment and policy to unleash the next century of growthElectric Advantage will demonstrate:

The urgent need for changeEstablish a common understanding of the imperative for change, the challenges that prevent electrification and a shared direction of travel.

The business case. Pilot, scale and publicize real-world solutions, building confidence in cost, performance and delivery models and the ability of policy to create economic growth.

The new rule book. Propose and test pragmatic government policies to accelerate electrification across all sectors.

How will we get there?

ELECTRIFICATION IN PRACTICE

Real-world examples of electrification solutions already exist in buildings, transport and industrybenefiting businesses and communities alike.

Transport

TRANSPORT

Maersk, a leading global container logistics company, has deployed over 340 zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, proving that electrification is becoming mainstream for freight transportation.

Industry

INDUSTRY

Organon, a global pharmaceutical company, is installing Trane Technologies’ decentralized heat pumps to replace their current fossil gas-based boilers. The heat pumps provide sustainable, efficient and all-year round heating and cooling, saving Organon nearly 7,700 gigajoules/year.

Building

BUILDING

Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer, is retrofitting heating and cooling by installing new, energy-efficient heating and cooling systems in their stores, replacing existing HVAC systems, and focusing on technologies like solar power, geothermal energy, and low-carbon refrigerants.
