Policy asks

What business needs from government for a cleaner, more predictable and affordable future

Our core policy asks underpin the Coalition’s advocacy across sectors and geographies, setting out how governments can create the conditions for business to go further and faster on climate.

International collaboration

1.

Strengthen international collaboration and coordination on climate to support global stability and predictability

Businesses need governments to work together across borders and send strong, united signals, especially when it comes to climate change. A predictable global system gives investors confidence and creates a more stable world where people and businesses can thrive.

Climate policy action

2.

Turn climate targets into real policies and action

Let’s turn promises into progress with clear domestic plans and policies. When governments set consistent rules and targets, businesses can move faster, invest more, and scale up solutions while creating jobs, lowering energy bills, and improving quality of life. Clear, stable policy frameworks also enable companies to develop and implement robust corporate climate transition plans which in turn drives transparency, investor confidence, and faster delivery of real-world results.

Climate risk impacts

3.

Address gaps in assessing and valuing climate risk

Policies and financial rules often ignore the true costs of climate damage, such as floods, fires, and heatwaves, and don’t encourage businesses to build resilience. As these risks grow, it’s time to update the system. We need governments to step up with increased public investment, for example in science-based monitoring systems and targeted funding for resilience, and to open channels for public-private sector collaboration on adaptation planning and procurement.

We also need better rules, such as adoption of relevant corporate transparency regulations and clarity on directors’ fiduciary duties that will lower long-term costs, and help communities stay safe and strong.

Clean energy transition

4.

Realign incentives to speed up an affordable clean energy transition

To make clean energy more affordable and secure and support reaching the goals of tripling renewable energy and doubling energy efficiency by 2030, governments need to realign the incentives that influence the market dynamics and inform business decisions. For example, targeted redirection of fossil fuel subsidies can level the playing field for scaling clean energy systems and electrifying key sectors.

By addressing these market distortions, governments can trigger investments in clean solutions and redirect finance into building the grid readiness and storage capacity necessary for a cost-effective and affordable clean energy transition.

Forest protection

5.

End deforestation and ecosystem loss

Nature is essential for a healthy planet and strong economies. Governments must turn international biodiversity and nature goals into clear, enforceable domestic policies and plans to deliver on commitments to stop deforestation and ecosystem loss, and support sustainable supply chains. Protecting forests helps safeguard food, water, and livelihoods across the world.

Climate finance investment

6.

Unlock barriers to investment so finance flows where it’s needed most

Developing countries often face higher borrowing costs, making it harder to invest in clean energy and climate resilience. Governments can help lower these costs and attract private investment by focusing scarce international public climate finance on mobilizing private sector investment with a focus on derisking. This is essential to meet global climate finance goals and ensure a just transition for all.

Electrificaiton policy asks

As businesses electrify, they need governments to provide clear and consistent signals of support for direct electrification combined with tailored policy packages that target both system-wide and sector-specific barriers.

We developed these 10 policy principles to unlock business action and investment. Taken together, these principles will help accelerate the transition to electrification.

Just transition policy asks

A just and equitable transition to a net-zero economy is essential for the resilience of communities and businesses alike. Nature policy asks

The nature and climate crises are inextricably linked, as are their solutions. With more than half of the world’s GDP moderately or highly dependent on nature, addressing climate and nature in tandem is imperative to building resilient economies and thriving businesses. The Nature at COP 30 Advocacy Toolkit for Business, developed by We Mean Business Coalition and Business for Nature, outlines five headline nature policy asks for governments.
