The SME Climate Hub

We can’t achieve a sustainable future or lasting economic resilience without including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Recognizing this, the SME Climate Hub was launched as a strategic initiative of We Mean Business Coalition.  

The SME Climate Hub drives global efforts to strengthen small and medium-sized business resilience. We have created the go-to platform for SMEs to navigate shifting market conditions and decarbonize their businesses, ensuring they remain prosperous, competitive, and future-fit in the low-carbon economy of tomorrow. It was co-founded in partnership with the Exponential Roadmap Initiative and the UN Climate Change High Level Champion’s Race to Zero campaign.

What does the SME Climate Hub do?

Small to medium-sized enterprises account for 90% of businesses globally, employ 70% of the world’s workforce and contribute over 50% of the global GDP.  They play a critical role in local communities and economies. However, discussion on climate action has largely focused on big businesses and governments. 

The SME Climate Hub has created a “digital home” for the missing middle, reducing complexity so that action became feasible. We have created the definitive platform for SMEs to navigate shifting market conditions and decarbonize their businesses, ensuring they remain prosperous, competitive, and future-fit in the green economy of tomorrow.

What does the SME Climate Hub do?

We focus our work around three core pillars:

Our goal is to remove barriers and maximize SME climate action and impact. By providing free tools, resources and knowledge, and leading the SME Climate Commitment, we are the first port of call for tens of thousands of SMEs globally, offering practical and credible support connected to other ecosystem players including the UN and the Science Based Targets Initiative.

In different parts of the world, small businesses have very different needs. By collaborating with partners and utilizing locally relevant pathways, we are reaching SMEs where risk and capacity gaps are greatest.

This means growing our local reach and accessibility through regional models so that support always fits local contexts, whether the business operates in the UK, India, the Nordics or Latin America.

Advancing an enabling environment

Small businesses can’t go at it alone. From policies to business incentives, small and medium businesses need standards, policy, buyers and lenders that increasingly work for them and reward credible action. When these conditions are right, they can catalyze upstream and downstream SME climate action at scale and reduce fragmentation across the ecosystem.
