17:15 – 18:15 GMT – Rethinking the built environment’s potential in connection with our energy system.

Buildings and building construction account for 37% of global energy- and process- related CO2 emissions globally. The GlobalABC’s Buildings Global Status Report and IEA’s Tracking Clean Energy Progress Report show that efforts since COP21, despite having led to efficiency gains and increased clean energy technology uptake, will not be sufficient to achieve global climate mitigation ambitions. To guide government action, the IEA’s net-zero by 2050 roadmap showed a pathway to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 paved by dozens of technology and policy milestones. In this event, experts will discuss how concerted action by governments, NGOs, industries and international organisations could put buildings on track to net-zero emissions.

Location – Business Pavilion, Boardroom, Hall 4
Hosted by – International Energy Agency (IEA).

18:15-18:45 GMT – Media Briefing: Business and Climate Vulnerable Forum

The We Mean Business Coalition, The B Team and the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) invite reporters to an on-the-record briefing at the end of the COP26 World Leaders Summit, which will set out the business community’s support for proper delivery of the US$100 billion annual climate finance commitment.

Hear from attending business leaders, including Marc Benioff, Chair and CEO of Salesforce, and CVF Country Leader(s) who will voice concerns about the share of climate finance provided as loans—which worsen, rather than alleviate, debt burdens.

Success or failure at COP26 will be judged in large part by the willingness of wealthy nations to deliver on their 2009 pledge of USD$100 billion to support vulnerable countries’ climate financing efforts—in particular, raising new funds rather than recycling existing commitments. Each dollar of debt is another dollar away from a sustainable, prosperous future.

CVF’s membership comprises 48 countries, a combined GDP of USD$2.3 trillion and 1.2 billion people, representing one-sixth of the world’s population. Yet they are only responsible for 5% of global emissions. Investment in these countries’ climate prosperity has the potential to catalyze several trillion in combined GDP, benefitting citizens, business and the global economy alike.

Reporters are invited to join this media briefing on Tuesday, November 2nd, about ensuring global climate prosperity for all—and business’ commitment to support the development of country proposals on the optimal use of climate finance in the coming months.

10:00-11:00 GMT – Investors’ role in the race to zero: How to shift building investments towards Paris alignment.

The financial sector plays a crucial role in transforming the built environment into net-zero carbon. Investors and financial institutions are recognizing their significant influence and responsibility for reaching the climate targets of the Paris Agreement in the built environment. However, the “financed emissions” from buildings, covering both operations and embodied carbon from construction, have so far not been adequately managed, accounted for or reported.

The Programme for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (PEEB) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) invite for a discussion with doers and thinkers from across the buildings sector value chain on how to shift financial investments towards green buildings.

11:30-12:30 GMT – Mobilizing Finance for climate-friendly cooling in developing countries.

There are legitimate financial and technological issues with industries in developing countries to adopt climate friendly cooling. The solution lies in multilateral and public private partnership funds to help developing countries strategize climate friendly cooling access and transition of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) to avoid up to 0.5°C of global warming. With the launch and implementation of India Cooling Action Plan, other developing countries are looking at their respective cooling action plans to build synergies amongst government and industry stakeholders from developed and developing countries. The panel discussion on mobilising finance for climate-friendly cooling would analyse funding gaps for research and technology in developing countries, building long-term strategic roadmaps for climate friendly cooling opportunities.

13:00-14:00 GMT – Achieving a global baseline for corporate sustainability reporting.

Regulators are moving towards mandatory sustainability reporting in a fragmented reporting landscape. The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations has been widely supported and applied by organisations across sectors and jurisdictions. Yet, individual countries have different domestic arrangements for adopting, applying, or supporting the TCFD. Could this lead to inconsistent and incomparable disclosure? In this panel discussion, we will look at the challenges and key steps needed for consistent, comparable, and decision-useful sustainable disclosure for investors globally.

The voice of business is crucial to advocate for ambitious climate policy to drive economy-wide transition but companies must be responsible and consistent policy advocates. As more companies set ambitious targets to reduce their emissions across their value chains, how do they mainstream their climate commitment across their business to act and communicate consistently? This is especially true when engaging policymakers, whether as a company or by their trade groups on their behalf. This session will discuss how company sustainability teams, public affairs and leadership can speak with one voice on climate.

The discussion will be chaired by the B-Team with contributions from Unilever, Mastercard, CalPERS, Royal DSM, and others.

Location – Business Pavilion, Boardroom, Hall 4
Hosted by – Ceres, B-Team, We Mean Business Coalition.

10:00-11:00 GMT – Making green cities a catalyst to build a net-zero future.

With 2.5 billion more people expected to live in cities by 2050, our world is building the equivalent of New York City every month. That’s why cities are leading the way in our transition to net zero and more than 700 of them have already joined the Race-To-Zero. The building sector plays an essential role in this transition, from the materials used at construction phase, all the way to a building’s efficiency throughout its lifecycle.

Net zero construction solutions exist today and need to be scaled-up faster for broader adoption. For breakthrough impact more innovation is needed. Regulatory incentives will accelerate the development of the net zero business case for the value chain.

We are opening a dialogue in Glasgow with key decision makers to explore how to drive more green demand, innovation and incentives to build greener cities for a net zero future.

11:30 – 12:30 GMT – Innovating our Way to Net-Zero: How Startup Investments Can Help Solve the Climate Crisis.

John Pettigrew, Group Chief Executive Officer, National Grid; Pedro J. Pizarro, President and Chief Executive Officer, Edison International; Arshad Mansoor, Chief Executive Officer, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI); and Lisa M. Lambert, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, National Grid and Founder and President, National Grid Partners, will discuss collaborations with, and investments in, startups as a key driver of clean-energy technologies.

The International Energy Agency says worldwide investment in decarbonization needs to hit $4 trillion annually by 2030 to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, up from $1.2 trillion today. That’s a key reason National Grid launched the utility industry’s first Silicon Valley-based investment and innovation group three years ago. But the challenge is too broad for any one company to meet alone. This panel of leading energy CEOs will discuss how innovation, investment and collaboration are vital to accelerate the journey to decarbonization.

13:00-14:00 GMT – The Global Resiliency Dialogue: Collaborating for Climate Resilient Buildings.

Recognizing that buildings and people are facing increasingly severe natural hazards caused by extreme weather, and that this increased risk is felt by countries around the world, building code developers and researchers from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States joined together to work through the challenge of integrating climate science into the development of building codes. In January 2021, this group, the Global Resiliency Dialogue, released the findings from a global survey of building code development and research organizations regarding how climate data and assessment of extreme weather event risks are currently considered or addressed in building codes around the world. A second survey was undertaken among stakeholders in each of the four participating countries to assess how to best facilitate climate responsive and resilient building codes and standards. The results of that second survey will be released and shared at this Buildings Pavilion presentation. The presentation will also discuss the next stage of work for the Global Resiliency Dialogue, which involves the development of global resiliency guidelines for buildings.

14:30-15:30 GMT – Impact Renewables: How should companies’ renewable energy strategies evolve to consider social and environmental justice?

As companies begin to see the inextricable link between social justice and environmental sustainability, their renewable energy strategies will need to integrate both the impacts and opportunities from a climate justice lens. Should renewable energy projects be focused solely on financial return, or should they be focused on “emissionality” and cleaning up the dirtiest grids in communities disproportionately impacted by air pollution? What innovative procurement strategies can support a just transition for former fossil fuel industry workers? How can local communities be supported and land use concerns be considered in clean energy procurement? Does policy play a role in a just transition to a low-carbon economy? This conversation will explore the ways businesses can incorporate holistic non-financial impacts into their renewable strategies.

The built environment contributes to close to 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, 50% of the world’s resource consumption and 36% of final energy demand. By 2030, the global new construction market is estimated to grow by $8 trillion, not to speak of important renovation of the current building stock. With over half of all buildings standing in 2050 still to be built, we have a critical, but narrow window for sector transformation. Only by catalyzing action and engaging in deep partnerships across the entire buildings value-chain can we decarbonize the buildings and construction sector by 2050.

On the occasion of COP26’s Cities, Regions and Built Environment Day, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP is organizing a session on ‘Urban Sequoia’ in GlobalABC’s #BuildingsPavilion.

Deep and sustained reductions from global emissions present the only possibility to limit global warming to 1.5°C. The latest IPCC report urges the speediness of reduction needed, and highlights that it can take 20-30 years for global temperatures to stabilise. Considering this, the built environment must rapidly shift from carbon-emitting to sequestering. A systemic approach where synergies are drawn between innovative designs, nature- and science-based solutions, and integrated processes can offer the transferable, as well as scalable solutions we all need. Buildable today, ‘Urban Sequoia’ looks to the future, and presents tangible solutions where buildings – similar to sequoia trees – actively sequester more carbon than they emit.

    Speakers:

Kent Jackson, Partner, SOM and Mina Hasman, Senior Associate Principal, Sustainability Lead, SOM.

The transition to net zero will create a vast array of benefits for the world we live in. From fresher air to cleaner water, reducing greenhouse gas emissions will improve the livelihoods of individuals across the globe for years to come. But who will experience those benefits? How can we ensure the benefits of the clean energy transition are accessible to everyone, despite the often capital-intensive nature of building a net zero world? These are the central questions of this panel event, where we’ll bring together leaders to discuss how we can create and implement measures that ensure the benefits of the clean energy transition are delivered equitably to all.

A celebration of the successes of Building to COP Coalition. Representatives of the core coalition members will gather to underline the achievements and announcements of the Cities, Regions and Built Environment Day and set the stage for the Coalition moving forward.

The reception is framed by our shared vision:

By 2030, the built environment should halve its emissions, whereby 100 per cent of new buildings must be net-zero carbon in operation, with widespread energy efficiency retrofit of existing assets well underway, and embodied carbon must be reduced by at least 40 per cent, with leading projects achieving at least 50 per cent reductions in embodied carbon.

By 2050, at the latest, all new and existing assets must be net zero across the whole life cycle, including operational and embodied emissions.

Please join us as we bring together the built environment sector to reflect on the progress made in this critical sector at Glasgow, reaffirm our commitment to deepen collaboration across the sector and look forward to the shared actions and pathways we must take to get us to 2030.
