Data tracker: are companies turning climate ambition into responsible advocacy?

In June 2023 the We Mean Business Coalition, with the support of the Responsible Policy Engagement (RPE) taskforce, published Ambition to Advocacy: a framework for responsible policy engagement. The framework outlines how and why companies must work to meet the rising expectations of them, from investors and other stakeholders, to cut emissions through vocal support for pro-climate policies.

By following the RPE Framework, companies committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) will meet the criteria for the Race to Zero (RTZ)’ s 5th P, ‘Persuade’. Climate advocacy disclosures and industry association reviews for larger companies are also a recommendation within the Race to Zero’s 5th P, Persuade, handbook.

To better integrate and track the links between corporate climate ambition and advocacy, the Coalition has worked with SBTi and InfluenceMap to create the below snapshot of where companies currently stand.

Towards accountability: tracking companies’ advocacy

The table below combines data from InfluenceMap’s analysis of the world’s largest 500 companies, widely recognized as the gold standard for holding leading companies to account for their strategic engagement with climate policy, with the SBTi-validated near and long-term science-based targets and commitments. It therefore includes just over 200 companies which appear in both datasets. Please contact us if you have questions or any feedback.

As companies with science-based targets put RPE into practice, we expect to see an improvement in companies’ scores in InfluenceMap’s analysis. Over time, as more companies disclose their advocacy through platforms including CDP, stakeholders will be able to gain a fuller picture of how companies are turning their climate ambition into vocal pro-climate advocacy.

The data currently presents a snapshot of companies’ combined targets and scores, as of June 2023. We are working to create a more comprehensive data tracker and will update this page in due course.
